Dr Erwin�Heberle-Bors b Kirchheim/Teck Germany, to Jakob�Heberle from Jahrmarkt, (Gyarmart in
Hungarian, Giamatain in Rumanian) near Timisoara in
West Rumania. The village was completely German before WW II but after
the war nearly all of the Germans went back to Germany. His father was a
prisoner of war in France for 2 years, before going to Germany. Erwin is the
oldest of 3 brothers, the others live in Germany One is Joachim, see Julich. His
ancestors came from the Hunsruck area in
Rhineland-Palatinate. They went to Jahrmarkt in the
1700s. Irwin lived in Austria 1983-84 and 1986-. He has researched plant
genetics. Since 1975 he has been author or joint author of 144+ scientific
papers. In 1969-72 Erwin did studies of agricultural biology and biology at the
University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. In
1972-76 he studied biology at the Free University of Berlin and in 1976 did his
Diploma (Masters degree). In
1977-82 he was Assistant professor at the Institute of Plant Physiology and
Cell Biology of the Free University of Berlin. In Oct 1981 he received his PhD
(Doctor of Natural Sciences). In 1983-84 he did post-doctorate work at the
Institute of Applied Microbiology, University of Agriculture and Forestry,
Wien/Vienna and in 1985 post-doctorate work at the Friedrich Miescher Institute, Basel, Switzerland. In 1986 he was Group leader at the Institute of Applied
Microbiology, Wien and in 1987 Leader of the plant genetics group at the newly
founded Institute of Microbiology and Genetics, University of Vienna. In 1989
he was granted Austrian Citizenship. Also in 1989 he was Professor for plant
genetics at the Institute for Microbiology and Genetics of the University of
Vienna and in July 1992 moved the institute to the new Vienna Biocenter. In 1996 his book �Herausforderung
Gentechnik� was published.
