1. INTRODUCTION
This
booklet, first published in 1995, provides some information about the history
of the Heberle family, based on data available in Australia, the Internet and
responses to letters and emails.
Computer translations of an earlier version of this booklet are
available in German, French and Portuguese.
Much of the information in this booklet is based on incomplete
information, with some guesswork.
Please advise me of omissions and errors; as I may revise/update this
booklet from time to time. This
booklet is one of a series intended to culminate in the publication of a Heberle
book in 2005.

This booklet has been typed in English. As such, umlauts (German) and graves (French) are difficult to
type. Most Haberles have an umlaut ()
over the a = () (this is often typed as ae in English) and many
French Heberles have graves(/)
over one or both es = ().
In general, umlauts and graves have not been used, but may be inserted
in a future revision.

5. ORIGIN OF THE HEBERLE NAME
There
are numerous surnames spelt somewhat similarly to Heberle. The first e can be a or ae. Some Haberles have an umlaut () over the a
= () (this is often typed as ae in English) and other Heberles have graves(/)
over one or both es = ().
Many surnames have different spellings. Some family members changed the spelling or pronounciation of
their surname, eg by adding an e or deleting the umlaut or graves, due to
change of language. In past times,
carelessness and a high degree of illiteracy (many people could not spell their
names) compounded the number of ways a name was spelt. Often government officials spelt the name
the way it sounded to them. In Germany
in the early days, people were often more concerned with how a name was
pronounced, than how it was spelt. As
a result, surnames were often spelt differently on various documents.
The
origin of the name Heberle is uncertain:

It may be occupational in
origin, associated with the Germans and Jews, meaning one who grew or dealt in
oats, from the early German word Haber for oats (Hanks and Hodges,
1988).

Its also possible that
Heberle comes from Eber, which is wild boar in German (source:
Gonzales).

It could be derived from
Heber which means a loader or carrier (Jones, 1990).

According to
Heintze-Cascorbi, Hattu/Hadu which means war in gothic, developed into Hadaperth,
Habbert, Habert, Hebert, Heberling, Heberle and other names.

Heberle and the related
names are difficult to pronounce and spell, so have been pronounced and spelt
differently at various times and locations, leading to many variations.

I believe that Heberle is
pronounced Heb-air-lay in German (He
as in bet); Haberle is pronounced Har-bair-lay in German (ar as in art); Hberle is
pronounced Hair-bair-lay in German
(air as in air); Haeberle is the same as Hberle, ie
Hair-bair-lay; Hberl is pronounced Air-bear-lay in French (H is silent). Different pronunciation led to different spelling.

The first hereditary
surnames were used in Germany around 1150 and by about 1450 virtually everyone
had one (Hanks and Hodges, 1988).
Prior to then, families had no set surnames. In France the surnames transmission from father to son was
established in 1539. Surname changing
was common until between 1670 and 1800, when it was stopped by laws in the
various German States. Until then it
was common for families to add or delete letters or suffixes such as l, e
and in at the end of the surname eg Heber, Heberl, Heberle, Heberlin,
Heberlein.

According to Hanks and
Hodges (1988), hypocoristic (pet name) suffixes -le and -len are characteristic
of Swabia (south western Germany, now Baden Wurttemburg); -l is characteristic
of Bavaria; -i, -li and -lin are characteristic of Switzerland and Alsace and
-ing and -er patronymic (derived from father) suffixes characteristic of
Westphalia.
Haber/Heber/Eber
group names closely and not closely related to Heberle
In
my opinion, Heberle is one of a number of surnames derived from Haber, Heber
and/or Eber.

Family tree data back to
1550 shows that Heberle/Haberle evolved from a number of names, including
Eberle, Heberlein, Heberlin, Haberle, Hebeler, Heberlig, Haberling and that a
number of names evolved from Heberle/Haberle, including Heberly, Haberly,
Heverly, Haverly, Hebrlee.

There is evidence that
Heberle/Haberle also evolved from or into or is related to names such as Haber,
Haberl, Heber, Heberl, Aber, Aberl, Eber, Eberl, Epperlein, Eberlini, Ebirlein,
Eberlinus, Hepperle, Erbele.

Names such as Heberlee,
Heberlie, Heberley, Habberley, Hebley, Heaberle, Haberley as found in Great
Britain, USA, Australia and New Zealand are almost certainly anglicised
versions of Heberle/Haberle etc.
There are a number of Haber/Heber/Eber type names which
may not be closely related to Heberle.
These
include Eberhart, Heberhart, Ebur, Epp, Eppen, Epple, Eple, Haberer, Haberar,
Haberma, Haberman, Habermann, Havermann.

Hebert is a common name,
perhaps originating from France and probably not closely related to Heberle (it
may be related to Herbert). The same
can be said of Ebert.

Some of the Hebers and
Hubers are British or Jewish origin and not related to Heberle.
6.
WHEN DID THE HEBERLE NAME ORIGINATE ?
The
surname Haber was possibly first used from about 1200. Heberlin, Heberlein and similar names were
possibly first used in the 1350s and Heberle first used about 1550. Bahlow (1985), writing in German, refers to
a Cunrad der Heberle of Eger ? in 1357, (Heberlein/Haberlein). This probably means that the first recorded
Heberlein/Haberlein surnames were recorded in 1357 and Heberle was later
derived from them. Brechenmacher (1960) also
writing in German, refers to Hainrich der Haberli in 1346,
(Haber/Haberle-in/Heberle). Various Haber/Heber/Eber group surnames were in use
in the 1200-1600s as listed below.

8. HEBERLE COATS OF ARMS
There are numerous coats of arms for various families within the Haber group of surnames. Below are 16 coats of arms from V & H Rollands Illustrations to the armorial general by J.B.Rietstap (1967), one from (Erard-Heggenzi 1926), one from Wappen Archiv Stuttgart (1983), one from Heberlein 1991 and two from Roberto Heberle of Brazil.

9. HEBERLES IN THE WORLD
Appendix
1 shows the names and addresses of the
heads of each of some 1100 Heberle families derived mainly from telephone
lists. Appendix 2 shows on
maps, places where Heberles lived in 1994.
Appendix
3A lists names some 90 names probably
related to Heberle and estimates of the number of people involved (190000).
This
includes data from "Generations World Name Index", The World book of
Heberles (1997) and World book of Haberles (1994).
How
common are Heberles ?
The
following table shows that Heberles are uncommon virtually everywhere, with the
exceptions of the Alsace-Lorraine area of France, the Baden-Wurttemburg State
in Germany and the State of Montana U.S.A., where Heberles are over 50 per
1,000,000 of the population (over 0.05%).

Languages
spoken by Heberles
Estimates
of the main languages spoken by Heberles are presented in appendix 1.
Based
on that data, about 48% speak German, 20% English, 18% French, 10% Portuguese
and 4% other languages.
Why
are there so few Heberles ?

The Heberle/Haberle surname
may be relatively recent in origin as it may have evolved from Haber/Heber,
Heberl/Haberl and Heberlin, Heberlein, Haberlin, Haberlein; possibly not before
about 1500. The first record of a
Heberle that I am aware of is for 1538.

Numerous variations of
the Haber/Heber/Eber surname have developed, meaning that most of the versions
are uncommon. As Heberle and some
similar names are difficult to spell and pronounce, many variations have
developed. By contrast there are very
few spelling variations for the very common British surnames Smith and Jones.

Some individuals were
lost from the family when some Heberles anglicised and changed their names (eg
to Heberley) after migrating to USA and other English speaking countries. Similarly some Heberles possibly changed
their names after migrating to other countries eg Heberle to Heberlein ? in
Switzerland and Heberli ? in Italy.

The Heberle name appears
to have originated in the south and west of Germany and the adjoining Alsace
and Lorraine area of France. This area
has been hit by numerous disasters over the years eg the Plague in the 1347-51
period which killed some 1/3 of the population, the 30 years war of 1618-48
which reduced the population in many areas by 3/4 and numerous other wars,
including World Wars I and II.
How
many Heberles have there been in the past ?
If
the Mormons IGI (International Genealogical Index) database is ever completed
we may be able to establish the number of Heberles in the 1500s to early
1900s. At this time we can only
guess. My latest very rough estimate
is about 22000, as shown below, based on data in Heberle family trees
1500-2002. Some family tree data is
available for c12000 (54%).

Branches
of the Heberle family
According
to Hanks and Hodges (1988), the places where a surname is most common now, is
often where the name originated, or geographically very close to those
places. Very few surnames are evenly
distributed throughout a nation. At
present there are large numbers of Heberles in the west and south west of
Germany and in the adjoining north-eastern part of France, previously called
Alsace and Lorraine, which was once part of Germany. The Heberle name was probably adopted in a number of places,
over a period, ie it is polygenetic, rather than monogenetic (derived from one
person). Branches currently thought to
be represented in Germany, France and elsewhere (mainly America) are shown below. This data is not reliable. Much more work is required.

Appendix
4 shows possible areas of origin of
Heberle family branches. This data is
not reliable. Much more work is
required.
How
many Heberles have migrated from Europe since 1700 ? My guess is
that some 300 Heberles have emigrated from Germany and eastern Europe,
including possibly up to 20 during the 1700s, some 200 in the 1800s (mainly in
the 1850-1880s) and about 80 since 1900.
Some of these Heberles changed their names and been lost from the
Heberle family. This estimate is
loosely based on the current proportion of Heberles in Germany (19 per
1,000,000), multiplied by the number of Germanic emigrants (some 10,000,000). This includes some 20 Heberles migrants from
Alsace and Lorraine and a few from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and
Hungary.
