ORIGIN OF THE NAME

There are numerous surnames spelt similarly to Heberle, including Hberle, Haberle and Haeberle. Many surnames have different spellings. Some family members changed the spelling or pronunciation of their surname, eg by adding an e or deleting the umlaut or graves, due to change of language. In past times, carelessness and a high degree of illiteracy (many people could not spell their names) compounded the number of ways a name was spelt. Often government officials spelt the name the way it sounded to them. As a result, surnames were often spelt differently on various documents.

The origin of the name Heberle is uncertain. In some places it was in use in 1550, before which church books (of births, deaths and marriages) are not available for most places.

It may be occupational in origin, associated with the Germans and Jews, meaning one who grew or dealt in oats, from the early German word Haber for oats (Hanks & Hodges 1988).

Its possible that Heberle comes from Eber, which is wild boar in German (Gonzalez 2001).

It could be derived from Heber which is a loader or carrier (Jones 1990).

According to Heintze & Cascorbi (1933), Hattu/Hadu, which is war in gothic, developed into Hadaperth, Habbert, Habert, Hebert, Heberling, Heberle and other names.

It is possible that Heberle has more than one origin and all of the above may apply.

In a few places the name Heberle was in use in 1550 but many of the branches had ancestors recorded with other surnames. Family tree data shows that some Heberles had ancestors with names such as Heberlin, Hberlin, Hberle, Heberlein, Eberle, Heberlig, Haberling. The most common recorded ancestor is Heberlin (c35% of the branches before 1700) but its possible that Heberlin is latin for Heberle. Many early church books were in latin. There is evidence that some Heberle evolved from names such as Epperlein, Eberlini, Ebirlein, Eberlinus, Hepperle.

Family tree data shows that a number of names evolved from Heberle, including Hberle, Haberle, Heberly, Haberly, Heverly, Haverly, Hebrlee, Heberling, Haberl, Heberl, in some places. In other places these names could have evolved from other names, such as Haber, Haver, Heber.

Names such as Heberlee, Heberlie, Heberley, Habberley, Hebley, Heaberle, Haberley, Heberly, Haberly, Heverly, Haverly, Hebrlee as found in Great Britain, USA, Australia and New Zealand may be anglicised versions of Heberle/ Hberle/Haberle.

There are a number of Haber/Heber/Eber type names, which may not be closely related to Heberle. These include Aberle, Eberhart, Heberhart, Epple, Eple, Haberer, Haberar, Haberma, Haberman, Habermann, Havermann. Hebert is a common name, perhaps originating from France and probably not closely related to Heberle (may be related to Herbert). The same can be said of Ebert. Some of the Hebers and Hubers are British or Jewish origin and not related to Heberle.

Examination of name index, telephone book and other data suggests that there were possibly some 285,000 people with Haber/Heber/Eber type names in the world in 2001, including some 56,000 Eberle, 19,000 Haber, 12,000 Haberl, 10,000 Eberlein, 9,000 Heber, 9,000 Eber, 7,000 Eberl, 7,000 Hafer, 7,000 Hebel, 7,000 Aberle, 3,900 Heberle, 3,700 Hberle and about 1,800 Haberle.

HEBERLE IN AUSTRALIA

All of the Australian Heberles have German ancestry. Most came from the Clausthal-Zellerfeld mining area in the Harz Mountains in the Kingdom of Hannover (now Lower Saxony State). By 1840, the Clausthal mines had been worked for over 700 years. A flood of South American lead caused the price to fall and put many German miners out of work. The Hannover government helped unemployed miners to migrate to Brazil, Mexico, Texas and South Australia between about 1840 and 1860. Clausthal-Zellerfeld is located about 80 km SE of Hannover and had a population of c17,000 in 2000.

South Australia

About 85% of the Australian Heberles are descendants of August Friedrich Heberle (and his wife Caroline, nee Papst),a miner from Clausthal-Zellerfeld, who arrived in Adelaide with wife Caroline and children, Wilhelm (aged 13), Carl (11), Hermann (5), Friedrich (2) in the barque "Herder" on 21 September 1851. At least four more children were born in Australia (August F b 1852, Albert A b 1855, Albert HC b 1856 and Augusta E b 1858). The family probably settled in the Mt Barker area before moving to the Burra area (Kooringa-Redruth), where they lived 1863-c1868. Some of the family spent some time on the gold diggings in the Bendigo District, Victoria, probably in 1852-1855 period. Some or all of the family moved to Moonta, possibly in about 1855, where August Friedrich died in 1870 and wife Caroline died in 1885. Some of the family, including Herman moved to Broken Hill in 1886. Wilhelm also moved to Broken Hill and probably so did Carl. August junior moved from SA after the birth of daughter Elsie in 1885, to Broken Hill, where son Leslie was born in 1889.

August Friedrich's elder brother Friedrich Ludwig arrived in Adelaide on 2 January 1855, with wife Carol and children, Augusta (19), Heinrich (16), Johanne (12) and Wilhelm (6). By 1858 they were living in Burra. Johanne married in Redruth in 1858 and two daughters of Heinrich CC were born in Redruth in 1867 and 1875. Charles and Anna Heberle were married in Hahndorf in 1888 and probably stayed in SA. Anna died in SA in 1904 and is buried in Hahndorf. Albert HC Heberle and Elizabeth (nee Sampson) were married in Adelaide in 1880 and their children were born in SA between 1881 and 1890. There are now few Heberles living in South Australia. Most are from the family of Wilhelm and Hilda Heberle who migrated from Rottenburg am Neckar, in SW Germany in 1952.

New South Wales

Some of the Heberle moved to Broken Hill around 1886. Broken Hill was not developed until 1885. There were many Heberle in Broken Hill between 1887 and 1900. Some of the family moved to WA for the goldrushes c1894-1899. Most returned to NSW, Victoria or SA, by about 1900. Harold Percy Heberle, son of Leslie was in Manly NSW in 1915, but returned to WA in about 1930. Cecil E Heberle, son of Albert HC was in Sydney by 1916. There has been no one using the surname Heberle in Broken Hill since 1958. In 2000 there was only one Heberle family living in NSW; the family of Kenneth and Rhonda Heberle.

Victoria

August Friedrich's family spent some time on the gold diggings in the Bendigo District, Victoria, probably in 1852-1855 period. Charles Heberle (born Clausthal-Zellerfeld 1838) was farming in the Huntly area near Bendigo Victoria from the 1860s until his death in 1925. Two of August Friedrich's sons, William and Frederick, lived in Melbourne in about 1886. The descendants of Fredericks son Harry B. live in the Myrtleford-Tawonga area. They are the only Heberles in Victoria. William Henry Heberle, son of Frederick Ludwig Heberle, lived in Melbourne from about 1874.

West Australia

Some of the Heberles were in WA for the Coolgardie-Kalgoorlie goldrushes. Herman Heberle worked in or managed mines in Coolgardie and Bardoc WA from about 1894-99. In 1897, Frederick Heberle was a Director at Broad Arrow Lease, N of Kalgoorlie. August Frederick Heberle junior was probably in the Kalgoorlie area from about 1894 but his family possibly did not move from Broken Hill to WA until about 1898. His descendants, some 50% of the surviving Australian Heberles, live in WA.

Queensland and Tasmania

Electoral rolls show that there are no Heberle voters in Tasmania, Queensland and the Northern Territory in 1990-2000. Haberle (occasionally spelt Heberle) are known to have lived in Tasmania since 1855.
