1. CLOSURE OF THE AUSTRALIAN FORESTRY SCHOOL 1965-67, OPENING OF ANU SCHOOL OF FORESTRY (BUILDINGS)1968
The Commonwealth Government announced in 1964 that the school would close at the beginning of the 1965 academic year.
The students were enrolled with the Autralian National University School of Forestry from 1965. Physically, the staff and students remained at the Australian Forestry School buildings in Yarralumla, until the ANU facilities were ready, which was for the start of the 1968 academic year. So the 1964/65, 1965/66 and 1966/67 students stayed at Yarralumla. The 1967 intake  (for 1st year only)and the 1966/67 students (for 2nd year) were the last to be trained at Yarralumla, for the 1967 academic year. The 1967/68 students were the first to be trained at the new ANU School of Forestry, in the 1968 academic year.

Dr. John Robert Thomas SHORT.
Educated at Perth Modern School and the University of Western Australia, where he graduated with First Class Honours in Zoology in 1946. After a short period on the staff of the Department of Zoology, University of Western Australia and as tutor at St George's College, U. of WA In 1965 he came to Canberra as Senior Lecturer in Zoology and Foundation Warden of Garran Hall in the Australian National University. From 1966-67 he was also Warden of Forestry House within the ANU and Garran Hall has always had a large group of foresters among its students. He resigned the Wardenship of Garran at the end of 1973.

4. ANU FORESTRY STUDENTS 1965-
The 1965, 1966 and 1967 students at Australian Forestry School were enrolled at ANU, but their lectures and accomodation was at AFS.

First year enrolled at Australian Forestry School. From the start of the 1965 academic year, the students became ANU students, but lectures and accomodation continued at AFS. Graduated with BSc Forestry from ANU, the initial graduation year.

Sir William Schlich (1904�1925) was a famous German forester who became Inspector-General of Forests in India. He established the forestry course in the Royal Indian Engineering College at Coppers Hill (UK) and founded the School of Forestry in the University of Oxford. A Memorial Fund was established in Oxford to recognise outstanding contributions to forestry in a number of countries including Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA and Canada.
A medal was awarded annually to the outstanding forestry student in the Australian Forestry School (from 1928) and the Australian National University. It was not awarded in other Australian institutions.

The Jacobs medal is awarded in memory of Maxwell Ralph Jacobs, an Australian forester who pioneered early research into forestry in Australia, particularly the growth habits and the utilisation of eucalypts. Field work is a vital part of forestry and this award is designed to acknowledge exceptional performance in this aspect of the overall role of foresters.
The medal is awarded to the student successfully completing the final year of the program of studies of the Bachelor of Science (Forestry) deemed by the Departments of Forestry at the Australian National University to have achieved the most outstanding performance in field studies, including field practical exercises, throughout the program.
